Some of the first donations for @samoahouselibrary 🌟🌺 If you have resources that you think will be useful for the community get in touch! ❤️
Pt 1: Kia Ora! We are excited to announce that on Saturday 22nd of September Samoa House Library will open to the public. Over the past six months as a group of Elam students and recent alumni we have challenged the decision made by University of Auckland’s management to close its specialist creative libraries, and we have decided that our best means of continuing in the face of negative and accelerated educational change is to develop and sustain an alternative platform. Through the campaign we have come to new understandings of: ourselves as a community; the purpose and nature of a library, as a collection of both people and books, and as a space. With a generous donation from the Chartwell Trust we have secured a great space on Level 2, 283 Karangahape Road. The library will first and foremost act as an alternative Fine Arts Library, but will function as a place of community development and communal learning, hosting workshops, lectures, screenings and critiques. Our approach will be open and democratic, with an emphasis on peer-to-peer education. @samoahouselibrary 🌟
Pt 2: Samoa House Library’s collection will be built and organised through alternative means, according to our community, meaning that right now we are seeking and relying on the donations of books and resources that will be catalogued or systematised in a way that cites its donor. If you are able to help financially or with donations of books, publications, or furniture please let us know at samoahouselibrary@gmail.com. Please contact if you have any suggestions or questions ~ we look forward to hearing from you. Thank you!! 🌼🌼🌼
Today students received an email from Diane Brand containing the following information: ~ Staff from the School of Architecture and Planning are being consulted with regarding the possible future of the Architecture and planning library. After feedback and “other recent developments” the current proposal is that the space become a study space for CAI as well as Engineering students. ~ The decision to make it a space shared with Engineering comes from a proposal to dedicate a portion of the former Engineering library, which is currently the Unleash Space to the Design School. ~ Updates regarding other libraries will come at another time. Save Fine Arts Library is working to obtain as much information as possible regarding the future of our collections, and the spaces and details of the Design School. Pressure will be put on University Management to front up to the student body and act transparently! We are unsatisfied by the University’s ambiguous information sharing and the lack of support we have experienced for far too long. #saveourlibraries
At the recent Courses and Careers day the University announced to potential 2019 students that the Fine Arts Library collection will be relocated to the General Library during the upcoming summer break. It is strange but unsurprising that this information has never been shared with the current student body, with the most recent update being: “Timelines are yet to be determined with regard to CAI libraries and there will be no changes during this academic year” in an email to students on the 21st of June 2018 from Diane Brand (Dean of CAI) announcing the library closures. At the open day the reason provided for the amalgamation of the CAI libraries with the General Library was that it would free up space for the new Design Degree that will be offered in 2020. The ‘Design School’ has been mentioned very occasionally throughout this year, but further details have never been accessible, even when requesting information through official University channels. Current students and alumni have been kept completely in the dark about it. #saveourlibraries #saveourlibrariesuoa
